What is a coffee table? It is a table that commonly sits in front of a sofa. It can be used for a variety of purposes, such as holding books, storing items such as toys, placing drinks, or resting your feet. Most furniture stores sell a variety of coffee tables such as tables made out of wood, glass and metal.

When you select a table, you want to make sure that it fits into the overall decorative scheme of your home. If your home is modern, you will want to select a modern table. If your home is more traditional, you will want to select a more traditional table. The coffee table should not stand out, but rather should complement the remainder of the home.

You will also want to measure for your coffee table, so you make sure the table is the right size for your room. You do not want a table that is too large or too small for your room.

Coffee Table Selection

If you are looking to get a bargain in your coffee table, you might feel some temptation to purchase a table that is made of particle board which is covered in a wood veneer. But if you are going to have regular or heavy use, that kind of coffee table may scratch or stain or the veneer could start to peel. A better choice would be treated wicker, or reed, or bamboo. A solid wood table like an oak coffee table is also a good choice because it is versatile and durable.

There are a so many styles to pick from starting at around $60 for unfinished birch coffee table to more than $2,000 for a white oak coffee table that will last forever.  Also good purchases because they are so long lasting, although maybe not as warm looking, would be glass coffee tables or ones made from molded acrylic (like Lucite or Plexiglas coffee tables. A clear or glass coffee table can help depict an illusion of space and cost anywhere ranging from $150 to thousands for the more contemporary collectors’ pieces.  Really, when you get right down to it, a coffee table could be made out of almost anything — copper or cork, driftwood or aluminum, or even an antique door that has been recycled. Most important is that it matches your taste.

Although the table itself is named after coffee,  a coffee table really shouldn't be exposed to water or moisture. Unsealed wood, in particular, is especially vulnerable, but really any kind of surface can develop a water ring if  you leave a cup sitting out for too long.  Coasters are really important to help keep your table in great condition.
