Duvet Bedding

Duvets have become very popular in the United States. Particularly because they are comfortable and you can switch out the covers creating an endless array of looks for the bedroom. The word duvet comes from the French word duvet which means "down". It is a type of bedding, basically it is a soft flat sack most traditionally filled with feathers or down, or a combination of the two that is put on top of a bed serving as a blanket or comforter. Because a lot of people are allergic to feathers and down, you can find duvets in the marketplace that are filled with synthetic materials. The duvet originated in rural Europe and was made out of the down feathers of the Eider duck. The duvet was recognized as being particularly useful as an insulator.

Duvets are still  very popular in Europe (particularly in northern Europe where duvet bedding is the most popular form of bed covering), and they have also become popular around the rest of the world during the late 1900's

Duvet bedding makes the making of a bed much easier. it is just one covering versus the whole combination of sheets, quilts, blankets or other bed coverings, which are common in certain parts of the world. The cover is referred to as a "quilt cover" or a "duvet cover".

In modern days, duvets bedding is occasionally filled with silk, cotton, wool, or even artificial filling (like polyester batting or another type of artificial material).  Occasionally it is mixed up with a  comforter. But comforters are placed on top of sheets and blankets, whereas duvet covers bedding is used by itself.

In certain European countries, any blanket that is thick and warm is called a bed duvet, since this has become a common name for this type of blanket. In Australia, a down quilt or duvet is sometimes called a "Doona", which is actually a generic trademark (which is registered to the Tontine Group) and is derived from the common Scandinavian word dyne and made popular by IKEA in the 1970s. Initially, the phrase continental quilt was the common name used over Australia, and some areas stillcontinue to use this term.In Pakistan, duvets are called ralli quilts, and are most often used in the southern region of Sindh.

In the U.S. the term duvet is sometimes mistakenly used to refer to the duvet cover.  For the purpose of this article, duvet refers to the actual down filled comforter.  Usually, manufacturers will rate the thermal performance of their duvets based on their tog rating. This allows the individual to pick out a duvet that is appropriate to the warmth level desired. The higher the tog rating is, the heavier the duvet will be.
