Jewellers or workers who deal with precious stones and metals utilize a number of ordinary and more customized hand tools and other equipment to create and produce new jewellery pieces, to cut, set in metal, and polish the gem stones; to fix or size necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, and other pieces of jewellery; and appraise the worth of precious metals, gems, and other jewellery. Jewellers tend to specialize in at least one of these areas and some might be employed by large jewelry manufacturing businesses, smaller retail jewellery businesses, or even as business proprietors. No matter the exact type of that is performed or where the work takes place, jewellers need to have a great degree of technique, precision, and detail orientation.

Approximately 40 percent of all jewellers own their own businesses.

Jewellers typically learn the trade in a vocational or technical type of school, through a distance-learning or online school, or simply from on the job experience.

The outlook for new jewellers should be good because frequently employers have trouble locating and keeping employees with the proper skills to replace workers who retire or quit the business for various reasons

What are Jewels?

It’s incredible how many different kinds of jewels or gems there are. First, its important to understand that individual kinds of jewels are associated with certain types of rock. Once you learn more about rocks, it becomes easier to understand the reason that different kinds of jewels are more common or very rare. For example, quartz is pretty common; it makes up the majority of the sand on a typical beach. But gem quality quartz is only found in certain, very specific environments. There are more than one hundred kinds of gems to select from, and it can be a difficult job to look through all the different kinds, shades, and shapes that are out there! Something that helps if you’re looking through different types of jewels to purchase a gift, is to have an idea of a color of jewel and general budget in your head. Birthstones would be a great place to start! They give you a direct connection to the person you are buying a gift for, and are loved by gem enthusiasts everywhere.

Diamond Jewellery

Did you know that the evidence of a good cut diamond can be seen by just looking at the stone while it is face up..

This is true!  Diamond jewelers will use a 10x magnification loupe to look for a few things.

  • Is the diamond's sparkle and dispersion of even across the whole face?
  • Is the table (this is the octagon shape) symmetrical and centered, with its edges coming together at distinct points?
  • If you look straight down through the table, is the culet (this is the point at the bottom of the diamond) either small or very small, centered, and have a polished and flat surface (i.e. unbroken and not chipped)?
  • Look for the square (this is the part created by projecting the octagon's edges out to the points of the star's facets that project from the stone's table). Are the square's sides straight, a little bent in, or bent out? The proportion of the diameter of the table to the whole width of the stone, could be estimated by using the lines that define the square. The stone should have a table that ranges between 53-64%. Tables on the smaller side have more fire (this is the rainbow of color), while tables on the larges sides show more brilliance (or white light). When the square's sides are somewhat bent, the table is around 53-58%. When the square's sides are straight, the table measures around 59-62%. If the lines bend out a little, the proportion could be 64% or even higher, and the table will look like it spreads over the majority of the surface of the crown. If the table is wide, its usually a oretty good indicator that the diamond's overall cut or proportion isn't ideal.

Sterling Silver Jewellery

How should you care for your sterling silver jewellery? You should keep your sterling silver jewelry inside cloths or bags that are designed for tarnish prevention. These specially treated cloths slow down the process of tarnishing and keep your jewelry (whether its designer jewellery or not) from rubbing against other jewellery that is harder and could scratch it. It's also a good idea to try to store your sterling silver jewelry in a dry and cool location.

How should you clean your sterling silver jewellery? Using polishing cloths is a great idea for keeping your sterling silver jewelry clean. You may read that its a good idea to use toothpaste to clean your sterling jewellery, but you should avoid doing that because toothpaste is actually abrasive and can leave scratches on it.

If you wear your sterling silver jewellery a lot, it will often develop a lovely patina, which is a sort of glow that is combined with darker areas. If you like this look, just leave it. If, however, you prefer a brighter and shinier look for your sterling jewelry, you can use a polishing cloth to bring back the original appearance of the jewellery.
