Silk Scarf

By

Starting In the nineteenth century, the cravat or mens silk scarf was once again a hot fashion accessory for men and mens silk scarves were a must-have for every man's wardrobe. Sweden was the primary supplier of silk scarves during this time, with the main merchants being K. A. Almgren and Casparsson & Schmidt. They were suppliers of ribbons and bands in addition to the silk scarf for Norway, Finland and other Scandinavian countires. The first types of headscarf or scarf featured a couple smallish pleats or fringe around the trim. Beginning in 1840, single or twice knotted fringe was considered very stylish and scarves were donned as both headwear and shawls.

It goes without saying that the twentienth century brought different kinds of scarves that were inspired by both trends of yesteryear as well as new ones. Although they still had interesting designs, scarves seemed to have dropped out of favor for a period of time. Well, they are back in a big way and their future looks solid since they offer great opportunities to play with color and pattern in fashion. Fashion houses and craftsmen have to struggle to keep up with the fashion designers requests.

Popularity of Silk Scarves

The most popular scarves of all would be silk scarves. The gorgeous quality of the silk material gives you infinite possibilities to spice up your wardrobe. Silk scarves can range from extremely lightweight to more delicate and even gossamer weight- like silk chiffon scarves or chiffon wraps. They can be worn in countless numbers of ways. For an example, you can wear a silk scarf as a head covering, a sash, a belt, an accent accessory or just as a shawl. You can do a plain black or white silk scarf or go crazy with wild patterns. Whether you are trying to be subtle and understated, or make a great statement through your wardrobe, a silk scarf can be just the ticket to help you accomplish your wardrobe goals.

But why exactly are silk scarves so special? Probably partially because they are made of silk! For centuries, silk has had the reputation of being a sensual and luxurious fabric. It is often associated with money or success.

Caring for your Silk Scarf

Everyone knows that beautiful things have to be well taken care of. When you really value something, it is an obvious fact that you would want it to last as long as it possibly could. But in order for it to last as long as possible, you have to take action to protect it- it won't protect itself!

if you highly value your silk scarf, make sure that you handle it carefully. If you are not wearing it,  fold it without a crease and store it in a dark and dry drawer or a box. You could also hang it on a hanger that is padded inside your closet. Also, make sure you iron it on a  low temperature and only dry clean it after it is dirty. It can also help to use an herb sachet inside your drawer or box where you keep your scarves.  This type of sachet will keep them clean smelling and will also serve as a repellant against moths. You can either purchase herbal sachets or you can even make your own. If you decide to make your own, here's an example of how to do it.

Just combine:
-2 oz each of dried rosemary, mint and lavender;
-1 oz of dried thyme;
-8 oz of whole cloves.

Sew 3.5 in squre pouches from a fabric that is tightly woven. Then, fill them with the herb mixture, tie the end that is open using a ribbon (to make it decorative) and put the sachet into your drawer or box.

If you use just a small amount of care, your scarves will remain in a good condition for many years to come.
